About the aknitica heels:

Amanda Schwabe has been developing this family of heels over the past couple years or so, since late 2024 / early 2025, and the first one published is in Knitty magazine. It’s called Palindrome, and you can go knit it there for free.

The aknitica heels are made with a combination of short rows and increases/decreases, and their arrangement makes a lovely diagonal stripe when viewed from the sides. They’re roomier than a typical short-row heel.

Aknitica heels turn the typical short-row heel shaping somewhat inside out, but alone, that switch makes unwearable socks. The key is to add in increases and decreases to balance the short rows and create wearable, comfortable heel cups. The fun comes in with all the ways that increases and decreases can be lined up within that structure, and with the multiple stitch patterns that can be placed within the heel areas.

The first imperative: the heels must fit well.

The second imperative: the heels must be logical, repeatable, and systematic, so that anyone so inclined can memorize their structure.

Socks are meant to be practical items first and foremost!

The Heels for Days Sock Club is a collection of heel and sock patterns that are suited to everyday knitting and first-time sock knitters (Gesso especially). There are a few extra techniques thrown in for fun in Spruce and Heartmoji for the more experienced or adventurous sock knitter.

For other designers:

If you want to design socks using aknitica heel shapes, there is enough information in the patterns to help you understand how they work, so feel free to use them as inspiration to play with other configurations and variations. You may not plagiarize my work, but you can cite it and create your own instructions and charts inspired by the structures. I look forward to seeing your ideas!
